IOM Future of Nursing Report 10-13-10

1.       Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.

2.       Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.

3.       Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States.

4.       Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure.

Keynote Address Panel

“Leading Nursing to All It Can Be” was the theme of the 107th Annual Meeting held at the Coralville Marriott in Coralville, IA. The changing health care environment needs nurses to take leadership roles and chart the course for the future. This can be achieved by safe nursing built on sound principles and policies, evidence based and technological nursing education. The Keynote Panel of Cheryll Jones, RN, PNP, ARNP; Ann Rhodes, RN, MA, JD and Dolores Hilden RN, Ph.D. addressed recommendations from “The Future of Nursing”, a collaborative initiative project by the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Objectives for the initiative work is to reconceptualize the role of the nurse, to redesign nursing education, to develop innovative solutions for delivery of care, and to attract and retain well prepared nurses in multiple care settings. Cheryll Jones addressed the Policy Recommendations of the report, Ann Rhodes addressed the nursing practice proposals and Dolores Hilden addressed the nursing education recommendations.

 
Continuing Education

In addition to the Keynote Panel presentation, additional continuing education presentations were offered during the conference for a total of 7.5 hours of possible CEU credits. The topics included: “When the Right Thing Does Not Get Done at Work: Recognizing Moral Distress and Navigating Your Way through it” by Rebecca Porter, RN, PH.D, ARNP. “Palliative Care: The Culmination of Holistic Nursing Care” by Anne Zook, RN,MS, CHPN and Deb Groath, DNP, ARNP, ACHPN concurrently presented with “Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections” by Barb Livingston, RN, BSN, MPH, CIC. The day long offering of continuing education  concluded with Lynn Boes, RN, BSN, JD presenting “Iowa Nursing Law: Legal Update for 2011”. 

 
Mentoring Social with Iowa Association of Nursing Students

Over 65 students attended the mentoring social reception hosted by the INA Membership Committee, chaired by Rhonda Carney. The event provided an opportunity for nursing students to learn more about their profession by speaking with INA members. Thanks to all members who mentored students in their professional career explorations. Drawings were held for special offerings.

 
Business Meeting

The three sessions of the Annual Business Meeting were chaired by Ginny Wangerin, INA President. The Business Meeting sessions were held on Monday and Tuesday.

Resolutions

Members debated several proposed resolutions at the business meeting. As a result, resolutions were adopted:

2.       Youth Access to Indoor Tanning in Iowa. By Jill Klein and Judith Collins

3.       Impaired Nurses (Reaffirmation of 2005 Resolution # 5) By. Betty Lord Dinan
4.       Restraint of Trade Against ARNPs (Reaffirmation of 2005 Resolution #14 and 2000 Resolution # 3) By Diane Anderson and Lynn Boes
 Proposed resolution on Diabetic Care in the Schools (Reaffirmation of 2010 Resolution #6) was withdrawn to rewrite and include more chronic conditions of school children in the resolution next year.

 2012 Annual Meeting will be Sunday-Tuesday, October 28-30th at the Iowa Events Center (former Vets Auditorium building), Des Moines, IA  Convention Hotel will be the Quality Inn & Suites adjacent to the Center.
 
Iowa Nurses Foundation Silent Auction and Raffle Fundraisers

Iowa Nurses Foundation held a silent auction during the business meeting hours. INF collected $1,571 from the silent auction, $2,045 from the raffle, $2,500.00 from the Honor Tables for a total of $6,116. The funds will be used for scholarships and to support educational activities of the membership, as well as fund administrative support for INF activities.

Michael Anderson Scholarship

The Iowa Nurses Foundation is a vehicle for money donated by Mr. Gerald Hugh “Mike” Anderson for scholarships for students interested in nursing education. The scholarships are only available to students at Grand View University, Des Moines Area Community College and the University of Iowa College of Nursing.
