"I'm more of a bullet point kind of person than essay.  If I were to prioritize the issues in Iowa and our nation right now, I would list the following: 1. There is a lack of mental health care in Iowa.  2. Recent immigration laws have negatively impacted our direct caregivers in the state.  3. The privatization of Medicaid has created gaps in health care for our elders and lower income Iowans.  This is a crisis for those who choose not to seek care or can't fill prescriptions. 4. I would also say that we are in a crisis regarding workforce development and bedside nursing.  I have a gerontological nursing background and I would love to see attention given to engaging members to this area of nursing and the critical importance of RN's in long-term care."

As treasurer, I want to continue the work of the finance committee to best manage the resources of INA to help meet this challenge. Sound financial growth is an important part of our strategy, We cannot rely entirely on membership dues but must explore other sources of revenue for the association. I look forward to continuing this work over the next two years and ask for your support in seeking re-election for treasurer."

What do you believe are the major issues before the Association or Foundation? Include your goals and interested in this position.

One of the biggest issues I see the ANA facing is the upcoming nursing shortage as well as policy changes/ nursing scope. Currently it is being felt within the organization I work at. Finding talented nurses who are dedicated to the profession and have the ambition to want to advance. Fostering their growth so that they can inspire another generation of nurses. Another hot topic that will be a major issue is nursing policy. Having stakeholders who keep a pulse on the ever-changing field is so important. This is why I would love to be involved within this organization. Speak for other nurses and share my knowledge.

"Nursing has historically been well respected and has significantly improved care at the bedside. However, we have been slow to combine our strength and voices to significantly influence health policy and population health. We have accepted the reality that this profession is high stress and potentially harmful to our own health for too long. This is not a reality we need to accept. My goals are to strengthen the cohesion of the profession through a strong ANA/INA and to advocate and support thoughtful dialog that leads to a strong and unified nursing voice. This strong nursing voice can then lead the way to improved holistic health for nurses and those we care for in our professional and personal lives."

Throughout my experience as a member of INA, I think the most pressing issue has been public recognition. I think INA has much to offer professional nurses and has limited success in being the professional organization to speak for nursing. The legislative work of INA is essential and effective and should be better known by practicing nurses. My interest in seeking this nominations committee position is to assist in finding candidates who will speak up for INA and nurses and bring the organization to the forefront in Iowa."

What do you believe are the major issues before the Association or Foundation? Include your goals and interested in this position.

"Like Healthcare, the direction/ purpose of INA and INF are changing to meet the needs of nurses today and to be relevant and current. I believe that in the last 18-24 months, INA and INF have started on the path to change and I have been honored to be part of that change and would love to continue to serve the INF board as we continue moving forward. Issues that face INA/ INF today is membership--- we need to continue to grow our membership, but also let members know why an INA membership is important. As Iowa nurses continue their education and grow in their roles as professionals, I love that INF is available to support those journeys through scholarships. I would be humbled and honored to continue to serve on the INF Board if elected."

What do you believe are the major issues before the Association or Foundation? Include your goals and interested in this position.

"I am retired Executive Director for the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON). During my time with IBON, I had many opportunities to influence the practice of nursing and participate in the challenges of nursing workforce shortages. The supply and demand for nurses is always changing and a constant challenge. The U.S. Department of Labor put out a statement in 2014 that the US will need one million more registered nurses by 2024. This is not replacement for retiring nurses, this is additional nurses. We can help meet this goal by “promoting and supporting the professional and educational development of registered nurses in Iowa.” (INF). I believe we should leave no stone unturned when looking for funding sources to assist nurses with the cost of nursing education."
