Here’s your chance to recognize a peer
Do you know someone who promotes professionalism in nursing? Here is your chance to recognize their contributions to nursing. Submit your award nominations to the INA office by June 30. To nominate someone, review the award criteria and follow the format listed.
Teresa E. Christy Award
Established 1982
The Teresa E. Christy Award is presented to a registered nurse that has demonstrated professional commitment to the improvement of health care and the interrelationship of nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing research. Teresa E. Christy, RN, FAAN (1927-1982) was acknowledged as the foremost nursing historian in the United States. Her brilliant career as a researcher, lecturer, writer, and educator was ended when she died of cancer on April 3, 1982. Dr. Christy, a member of the ANA Commission of Nursing Research, was a professor at the College of Nursing, University of Iowa. At the time of her death, Dr. Christy was INA’s Second Vice President and was a valued colleague on the Board of Directors. Dr. Christy published 21 articles, one book, and delivered more than 100 speeches to various national, state, and university organizations. Her last article was, “Historical Background of Entry into Practice,” American Journal of Nursing, May 1980. Dr. Christy had the ability to apply critical thinking in analyzing nursing’s current issues. She promoted an alteration of attitudes and beliefs in nurses that nursing makes a difference. She had tremendous ability to inspire nurses to care; she believed in excellence in practice and education.
Criteria for the award are:
- Member in good standing in any state nurses’ association who has been, or is currently, a member of the Iowa Nurses’ Association.
- Evidence of professional commitment to the resolving of issues and to increasing knowledge of nursing trends for the improvement of health care.
- Evidence of outstanding contributions to the interrelationship of education, practice, and research.
Nominations must be received in the INA office by June 30, 2002. The INA Executive Committee will select the award winner. The recipient will be recognized and receive an award certificate at the INA annual convention. The awardees name is included on the plaque displayed in the INA office.
Edith E. Ruppert Award
Established in 1971
The Edith E. Ruppert Award is presented to an Iowa nurse who, as a member of INA, is judged to have contributed significantly to the improvement of nursing and the professional organization. Edith E. Ruppert (1907-1999) became President of the Iowa Nurses’ Association during one of the most critical periods of the Association’s history. The membership was divided over the issue of collective bargaining. Edith Ruppert provided the leadership and dedication necessary to preserve the Association as a viable professional organization for Iowa nurses. Edith Ruppert demonstrated her belief that regardless of differences, nurses must remain a strong collective unit and be represented by the professional organization.
Criteria for the award are:
- Member in good standing in the Iowa Nurses’ Association.
- Evidence of professional commitment to the resolving of issues and to the increasing knowledge of nursing trends for the improvement of health care.
- Evidence of outstanding contributions to the Iowa Nurses’ Association.
Nominations must be received in the INA office by June 30, 2005. The INA Executive Committee will select the award winner. The recipient will be recognized and receive an award certificate at the INA annual convention. The awardees name is included on the plaque displayed in the INA office.
Hector Perez Award
Established in 2001
The Hector Perez Award is to be presented to an Iowa Registered Nurse who is a member of the Iowa Nurses Association, and has made a significant contribution to nursing in a clinical setting as a member of a minority group in this profession.
Hector Perez, RN, ARNP (1953-2001) represented the role of men in nursing and demonstrated a commitment to improve methods in nursing to address the varied cultural needs of patients and members of the profession. Hector was born in Puerto Rico, received his Bachelor of Science nursing degree from the University of Texas Science Center, San Antonio, Texas and a Master of Science Nursing degree from Clarkson College Omaha, Nebraska. He was employed at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa as an intensive care nurse and as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the emergency room until retiring in October 1999 due to health reasons. Hector assisted with cultural diversity teaching in the hospital, school of nursing and community.
Hector had a commitment to Iowa Nurses Association, serving as a District President for District #4 for four years, he believed active participation in the professional organization was worthwhile in developing and maintaining a nursing career.
Criteria for the award are:
- Registered nurse who is in good standing as a member of the Iowa Nurses’ Association.
- Evidence of professional commitment to the clinical setting of nursing.
- Evidence of representing men or being a member of a minority group in nursing
- Contribution to improving practices that address cultural diversity in nursing.
Nominations must be received in the INA office by June 30, 2005. The INA Executive Committee will select the award winner. The recipient will be recognized and receive an award certificate at the INA annual convention. The awardees name is included on the plaque displayed in the INA office.
Friend of Nursing Award
Established 1987
The Friend of Nursing Award is given annually to recognize non-nurse individuals or groups of individuals who have made significant contributions to the profession of nursing and to the health care of Iowans.
Nominations must be received in the INA office by June 30, 2005. The INA Board of Directors will select the award winner. The nominator of the awardee will present the award at Convention. The recipient will receive a plaque.
